Dropshipping

What is Dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a retail model where an online store sells products without keeping them in stock. When a customer orders, the store passes the order to a supplier, who ships the product directly to the customer. The store earns the difference between its price and the supplier’s price.

Pros

  • Low start-up costs, with no inventory to buy or store
  • A wide range of products can be offered
  • The business can be run from anywhere

Cons

  • Low margins and strong competition, often on price
  • Little control over product quality, stock and delivery times
  • Customer service problems when suppliers make mistakes
  • The store is still responsible to the customer under consumer law, including returns and product safety

Marketing a dropshipping store

Because many stores sell the same products, success depends on choosing a niche, building a brand and giving customers a reason to buy from you: better content, service, bundles or curation. Copying supplier descriptions and images creates duplicate content, so write your own. Paid social ads are common, but costs can quickly eat the margin, so track the profit on each order carefully.

Dropshipping example

A store sells a yoga mat for 40 euros. The supplier charges 22 euros and ships it to the customer. After payment-provider fees and ad costs of 10 euros per sale, profit is about 6 euros. If the customer returns the mat or the package is late, the store’s profit disappears. The store therefore chooses suppliers with tracked shipping and a clear returns process.

Checklist before you start

  1. Order samples to check quality and delivery times yourself.
  2. Calculate profit per sale after supplier cost, fees, ads, returns and taxes.
  3. Check consumer-law duties in your market: returns, product safety, customs and VAT.
  4. Write your own product descriptions and photos, not the supplier’s.
  5. Show honest delivery times and returns terms.
  6. Plan how to reach customers other than paid ads, such as SEO and email.

Dropshipping mistakes

  • Copying supplier text, which many other stores also use. That is duplicate content.
  • Promising delivery times the supplier cannot meet.
  • Choosing products that are cheap to find elsewhere, so the only competition is price.
  • Ignoring trademark and safety rules.
