X (Twitter) Advertising

What is X (Twitter) Advertising?

X advertising, called Twitter advertising until the platform was renamed X in 2023, is paying to show promoted posts and other ads on X. The ads appear in people’s timelines, in search results and on profiles, and are managed in X Ads Manager.

Ad formats

  • Promoted posts: ordinary posts with text, images or video, shown to people who don’t follow you.
  • Video ads, including ads shown before videos from publishers.
  • Carousel ads with several images or videos.
  • Follower ads that promote your account.
  • Takeovers of the trending list or the timeline, for big launches.

Targeting options

X ads can target by location, language, interests and the keywords people use, by follower lookalikes (people similar to the followers of chosen accounts), and by your own customer lists and website visitors.

When X ads make sense

X is strongest for real-time topics such as news, events, sports, technology and finance. Test with a small budget, track conversions with the X Pixel, and compare the cost per result with other channels before scaling up. Twitter Promote Mode, a subscription that promoted posts automatically, has been discontinued.
