How AEO differs from SEO
Classic SEO aims for a high position in the list of results. AEO aims to be the source an answer is built from, which is often shown or read aloud without a click. The two overlap heavily: answer engines mostly draw on pages that already rank well and are trusted.
How to optimize for answer engines
- Answer common questions directly, in the first sentence under a clear question heading.
- Structure pages with headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables.
- Show expertise: named authors, first-hand experience, sources and up-to-date facts.
- Use structured data to describe your business, products and articles.
- Build your brand’s reputation elsewhere, with reviews, mentions and links from trusted sites.
- Make sure crawlers can reach your content, including the AI crawlers you want to allow.
Measuring AEO
Track whether your brand is cited in AI Overviews and assistant answers for your key questions, together with featured snippets, branded searches and referral traffic from AI tools.
AEO example
A tax advisor writes a page titled “Do I need to register for VAT?”. The first sentence under the heading gives the rule in plain words. Below it are the registration steps, a worked example and a short list of exceptions, with the advisor’s name and credentials at the top. The page now suits a featured snippet, an AI Overview citation and a spoken answer from an assistant.
AEO checklist
- List the 20 questions customers ask most and give each a direct answer.
- Put the answer first, then the detail.
- Add structured data that matches what is on the page.
- Show who wrote it and why they can be trusted.
- Keep key pages crawlable and fast.
- Check whether AI tools mention or cite your brand and note what they say.
AEO mistakes
- Treating AEO as a separate trick from good SEO. It builds on it.
- Marking up content that is not visible on the page.
- Stuffing pages with questions nobody asks.
- Expecting precise rankings: AI answers change from one query to the next.
AEO FAQs
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap. AEO is more about being the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being used and cited in generated answers. See our guides to answer engine optimization tools and generative engine optimization tools.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Pages that already rank and are trusted are most likely to be used. Read about the answer box.
