Direct Marketing

What is Direct Marketing?

Direct marketing is communicating directly with individual customers or prospects, rather than through mass media, to get a measurable response such as a purchase, a call or a sign-up. Common forms are email, direct mail (letters and postcards), text messages, telemarketing and targeted online ads.

Types of direct marketing

  • Email marketing: newsletters and personal offers to subscribers.
  • Direct mail: printed letters, catalogs and postcards sent by post. It stands out because people receive less physical mail today.
  • SMS and messaging: short offers and reminders by text message.
  • Telemarketing: sales calls to prospects or existing customers.
  • Targeted digital ads: ads aimed at specific people, such as remarketing or uploaded customer lists.

Why businesses use it

  • Messages can be personalized for each recipient.
  • Results are easy to measure with codes, links and response rates.
  • It works well for reaching existing customers and specific segments.

Rules

Direct marketing is regulated. In the EU, the GDPR and ePrivacy rules require consent for most marketing emails and texts, people can object to direct marketing at any time, and telemarketing is restricted in many countries. Keep records of consent, and honor opt-outs quickly.

Direct marketing example

A local garden centre sends a postcard to customers within 10 km each spring with a code for a free plant, and an email to subscribers with the same offer. It counts the codes used at the till and online. The postcard costs more per contact than email, but the redemption data show which customers respond, and the next mailing goes only to them.

Rules to follow

  • Email and SMS: in many countries you need consent before sending marketing messages, and an easy way to opt out.
  • Direct mail: respect “no advertising” notices and keep address lists up to date.
  • Telemarketing: check do-not-call registers and local rules.
  • Data: collect only what you need, and tell people how you will use it (GDPR or local law).

Direct marketing mistakes

  • Buying lists of people who never agreed to hear from you.
  • Sending the same message to everyone.
  • Not tracking responses with codes, links or phone numbers.
  • Contacting people too often.
