Social Media Marketing

What is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing is using social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and X to build a brand, reach new customers and keep in touch with existing ones, through unpaid posts, community management and paid ads.

The main parts of social media marketing

  • Content: posts, images, videos, stories and live streams planned around your audience’s interests.
  • Community management: replying to comments and messages, and joining relevant conversations.
  • Paid social: ads targeted by location, interests, behavior or job title, plus remarketing to website visitors.
  • Influencer and creator partnerships: reaching audiences that already trust someone else.
  • Social listening: tracking what people say about your brand, your competitors and your industry.

Choosing the right platforms

Be where your customers are: LinkedIn for B2B, Instagram and TikTok for younger consumers and visual products, Facebook for broad local audiences and YouTube for how-to and review content. Two platforms done well beat five done badly.

Measuring social media marketing

Look at reach, engagement rate, website traffic from social, leads and sales. Tag your links with UTM parameters, and judge paid campaigns by cost per result and return on ad spend.

Social media marketing example

A local bakery posts photos of the morning bake on Instagram, short videos of decorating on TikTok and the opening hours and specials on Facebook. It replies to every comment, shares customers’ photos with permission and runs a small ad for a weekend offer aimed at people within 5 km. It counts how many people mention a social post in the shop and how many redeem the offer code.

A simple social media plan

  1. Choose one or two platforms where your customers are active.
  2. Set one goal per platform: awareness, traffic, leads or sales.
  3. Plan content themes, such as tips, behind the scenes, customer stories and offers.
  4. Post at a rhythm you can keep, and reply to comments and messages quickly.
  5. Test paid posts for your best content.
  6. Review the numbers monthly and drop what does not work.

Social media marketing mistakes

  • Being on every platform with no time to do it well.
  • Posting only promotions.
  • Buying followers.
  • Ignoring comments and messages.
