How Facebook ads work
- Choose an objective: such as awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales. The objective tells Meta what result to optimize for.
- Define the audience: by location, age, interests and behavior; with custom audiences built from your website visitors or customer lists; or with lookalike audiences similar to your customers. Meta’s Advantage+ options let the system find people for you.
- Set a budget and schedule: a daily or lifetime budget. Meta runs an auction among advertisers, and the winning ads are shown, based on the bid, the expected result and the quality of the ad.
- Choose placements: Facebook and Instagram feeds, Stories, Reels, Messenger and others, or let Meta choose automatically.
- Create the ads: image, video, carousel or collection formats, with text and a call to action.
Facebook ad formats
- Image ads: a single image with text and a button.
- Video ads: short video in the feed, in Stories or Reels.
- Carousel ads: several images or videos that people swipe through.
- Collection ads: a cover image or video with a set of products below.
- Lead ads: forms that open inside the app so people can leave details without visiting your site.
What do Facebook ads cost?
There is no fixed price. Cost depends on the audience, the competition in the auction, the season, the quality of the ad and the objective. You pay on a basis such as impressions (CPM) or clicks (CPC), and you can set a daily or total budget, so you control the most you spend. Start small, test, and scale what works.
Measuring results
Install the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API to track actions on your website, such as leads and purchases. Add UTM tags so your analytics shows which ads bring visitors. Judge campaigns by cost per result and return on ad spend, not just by clicks or likes.
Tips
- Lead with the creative: the image or video decides most of the performance.
- Test several creatives and let the budget flow to the best ones.
- Match the landing page to the ad. See landing page.
- Use remarketing to reach people who visited but did not buy.
- Follow Meta’s advertising policies. Ads about credit, employment, housing and social issues, elections or politics face extra rules.
- Get consent for tracking where the law requires it.
